Die wichtigsten Lektionen, die ich als Hundebesitzerin beim Umgang mit der Sommerhitze für meinen Hund gelernt habe

The most important lessons I have learned as a dog owner when dealing with the summer heat for my dog

Patricia Rathgeb

The fact is: dogs cannot sweat like we humans can.

Heat is problematic for dogs. At an ambient temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius, many of them become uncomfortable. Temperatures above 30 degrees are particularly dangerous.

That's why we have to pay particular attention to the well-being of our four-legged friends in the increasingly hot summer months. In this article, you'll learn why heat is so dangerous for dogs and how you can best protect your darling - preventively and in acute cases.

Imagine you are sitting in the garden at 30 degrees, the sun is burning and you can only sweat through your feet and tongue. Your body is getting hotter and hotter because it cannot cool itself down sufficiently. We can hardly imagine this because we have up to 4 million sweat glands.

Unlike humans, dogs have very few sweat glands - and these are only on their paws. They mainly try to cool down by panting and using the sweat glands on their paws. This makes it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. On hot days, this can quickly lead to overheating.

But how do you know that your dog is suffering?

Watch for excessive panting, lethargy, vomiting, or even collapse. These symptoms are serious and require immediate attention.

Which dogs are particularly at risk?

Some dogs are more susceptible to heat stress than others. Groups particularly at risk include:

  • Short-nosed dogs : Breeds such as bulldogs, pugs and boxers have restricted breathing due to their short snouts and therefore have greater difficulty regulating their body temperature through panting.
  • Older dogs : Older dogs often have a weaker cardiovascular system and are therefore more susceptible to heat stress.
  • Overweight dogs : Overweight dogs have more difficulty moving and regulating their body temperature.
  • Dogs with thicker coats : Breeds with thicker or longer coats, such as Bernese Mountain Dogs or Huskies, have a harder time cooling down.
  • Dogs with pre-existing medical conditions : Animals that already have health problems are often more sensitive to heat.

Preventive measures against heat stress

“Prevention is better than cure” - this also applies to heat stress. Here are some tips that you can implement immediately:

  • Create shady places : Your dog always needs access to cool, shady places. A shady spot in the garden or on the balcony can work wonders.
  • Provide enough water : Make sure your dog always has fresh water available. In summer, it may be a good idea to set up several water bowls so that your dog has access to water everywhere.
  • Time walks correctly : Plan walks in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Asphalt can heat up in the sun and burn your dog's paws.
  • Cooling mats and vests : Special cooling mats and vests can help your dog regulate his body temperature.
  • Grooming : Regular brushing helps remove loose hair and improves air circulation to the skin. A summer haircut may be beneficial for dogs with thick coats.

Acute measures for heat stress

But what should you do if it is already too late and your dog is suffering from heat stress? Here are some immediate measures:

  • Cooling : Wet your dog with water or place wet towels on his body. Avoid ice cold water, however, as this can cause shock. Lukewarm water is ideal.
  • Hydration : Give your dog electrolyte solutions and plenty of water. There are special electrolyte supplements for dogs that can be very helpful in the summer.
  • Visit a veterinarian : If symptoms are severe, do not hesitate to seek immediate veterinary attention. Quick action can be life-saving.

Recognizing signs of heat stroke

It is important to recognize the signs of heat stroke early so that you can take timely action. Symptoms of heat stroke include:

  • Heavy panting
  • Salivation
  • lethargy
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Disorientation or dizziness
  • Dark red or pale mucous membranes
  • Collapse or unconsciousness

If your dog shows these signs, act quickly! Take him to the shade or a cool room immediately. Wet his body with lukewarm water and give him small amounts of water to drink. See a vet immediately to avoid further complications.

Long-term health strategies for the summer

A healthy diet and an adapted lifestyle are the key to getting your dog through the summer. Feed light, nutrient-rich food and schedule regular check-ups with the vet. Regular use of our EQUUSIR products can also help maintain your dog's health in the long term.

  • Nutrition : In summer, it can be a good idea to reduce the food rations a little and give small portions more often so as not to put unnecessary strain on the digestive system. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be a refreshing addition to the normal food.
  • Exercise : Avoid intense physical activity during hot times of the day. Instead, take your dog swimming or taking quiet, shady walks.
